A LITTLE ABOUT ME …

Hi, I’m Molly!

I want to start by telling you the story of my name, wavebelly. When I first expressed interest in birth work, my mom told me the story of sitting bedside during her best friend Sara’s labor. Now, my mom’s a registered nurse. Not only that, her specialty is wound care so she’s seen some stuff. Still, she found herself at a total loss over how to help her friend and could come up with just one phrase that she repeated over and over — “ride the wave. Just ride the wave.” I’d love to say that this phrase held within it real magic that collapsed Sara’s labor into a five-minute, pain-free euphoria, but rumor has it the response was closer to “I’m not riding a f*cking wave!” Wave or not, I love imagining them in the delivery room together as much as I love hearing them tell the story some 30 years later.

I am currently certifying as a full-spectrum doula through DTI. I was initially drawn to DTI’s program because of their commitment to reproductive justice and to thinking of the well-being of birthing people as intricately connected to the well-being of our society as a whole. Through my training, I also gained an appreciation for what they call the Slow Doula Method, an approach to care that prioritizes deep listening, individualized plans, and constant, non-invasive support for each client.

My friend and first client, Mary, described what I aim to do best. She writes, “A doula’s role is to be a trusting partner to the birthing person throughout the experience. This way the doctors and nurses can focus on their job of ensuring your health and safety, any friends and family present can have their own experience, and your comfort is in the full focus of your doula.” Wherever your reproductive self takes you, I’ll be there to provide support as you — dare I say it — ride that wave.
